We hope to start with Saturday classes where we break down the aspects of boxing, including fitness, food preparation, and kinetics, to demonstrate the “sweet science” as supplemental for reading, science, and mathematics. I could not find an example of boxing concepts and STEM, so we could create a unique program as part of our Catalyst Initiative.
I also want to find a way to measure the self-concept and self-esteem of our kids when they start and measure it again after they win their first tournament. I think that would also help with grant writing and grant management. I also hope to do a peer-reviewed write-up on my dissertation findings.
I found that black students responded better than white students on the Tennessee Self-concept Scale among developmental students at Hinds Community College’s Raymond Campus. All other studies I reviewed consistently found no difference. I am trying to find evidence that when I shared my story and presented myself as a black male Ph.D. candidate, the black students identified with me, putting them in a better self-concept frame. For now, this is just a theory.
I think that Keep Swinging Boxing and Fitness has a lot of anecdotal evidence that boxing training and healthy weight management raise the self-concept or self-esteem of our boxers. We need to find a way to capture data and find a way to further engage our kids in solving the problem of youth diabetes, youth violence, and youth dropout rates. Example Saturday topics could include S.T.R.E.A.M.:
